Delhi Lawyers Strike to Block LG’s Virtual Evidence Order

Delhi district court lawyers strike on Aug 22-23 protesting LG’s virtual evidence order.

The coordination committee of all district bar associations in Delhi has declared a complete work stoppage across all district courts on August 22 and 23, in response to a contentious August 13 notification issued by the Lieutenant Governor (LG). The notification permits police to present evidence virtually from police stations, a move the legal fraternity deems arbitrary and unlawful.

Tarun Rana, additional secretary general of the committee, stated that a representation demanding the withdrawal of the notification was submitted to key authorities, including the LG, the Union Home Minister, and the Delhi Chief Minister.

Despite these efforts, the authorities have not revoked the order, prompting widespread resentment among lawyers. "The notification is against fundamental law and public interest," Rana asserted, highlighting the committee’s unanimous decision to abstain from work to protest the decision.

The committee has warned of strict action against non-compliance with the strike and plans to reconvene on August 23 to assess the situation and determine further steps. The strike reflects the legal community’s strong opposition to the notification, which they argue undermines judicial processes and public rights, signaling a potential escalation if their demands remain unaddressed.
