Delhi Govt Allows Parents To Choose Vendors For Books And School Uniforms

Delhi government orders private schools to allow parents freedom in buying books and uniforms, warns of strict action.

The Delhi government has directed all private schools in the capital to ensure that parents are given full freedom to purchase textbooks, uniforms, and stationery from any vendor of their choice, amid rising complaints about mandatory purchases imposed by certain institutions. The move comes as part of a broader effort to curb alleged monopolistic practices in school supply systems.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government would not tolerate any form of compulsion forcing parents to buy educational materials from specific vendors or school-linked outlets. She warned that strict action would be taken against violators, including the possibility of government takeover of schools found repeatedly breaching regulations. The directive is aimed at ensuring transparency and reducing financial pressure on families.

Under the new instructions, schools have been asked to clearly display notices on their premises, official websites, and in-house stores stating that parents are free to choose their preferred vendors. While schools may suggest a list of five to six vendors for convenience, officials clarified that these recommendations cannot be made mandatory under any circumstances.

The Chief Minister also indicated that the government may conduct surprise inspections across private schools based on complaints and feedback received from parents. She emphasized that these inspections would not be symbolic but result-oriented, with cases of irregularities being personally reviewed by her office. The administration has reiterated its focus on ensuring accountability in the education sector.

As part of ongoing enforcement actions, a joint team from the Education and Revenue Departments recently inspected Venkateshwar Global School in Rohini Sector-13 following complaints of violations. Officials found that the institution was operating without a valid fire safety certificate, and its swimming pool was also functioning without a licence, leading to its immediate sealing by authorities.

The Delhi government stated that the crackdown will not be limited to a single institution but will extend to all private and aided schools across the capital. Officials said the objective is to ensure transparent practices, safeguard student safety, and protect parents from unfair financial burden, while maintaining quality standards in the education system.
