Delhi Government Introduces Aftercare Scheme For Orphaned Young Adults
Delhi government launches Aftercare Scheme to support orphaned youth with education, training, and financial assistance.
The Delhi government has announced a new welfare initiative titled the ‘Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons’ aimed at supporting individuals transitioning out of child care institutions. The scheme was launched on Sunday, coinciding with Mother’s Day, and has an allocated budget of ₹3.5 crore for the 2026–27 financial year.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative is designed to provide structured support to young adults who often face challenges after leaving institutional care. She noted that while children receive protection within care homes, many struggle with education, employment, and financial stability once they exit the system.
The scheme will offer a range of benefits, including financial assistance for higher education, access to skill development programmes, vocational training, internships, and employment opportunities. Beneficiaries will also receive monthly stipends along with additional financial aid to address emergency or case-specific needs.

Alongside economic support, the programme places emphasis on long-term rehabilitation and personal development. It includes provisions for mentoring, counselling, and career guidance to help young individuals integrate into society and build sustainable livelihoods. Officials stated that beneficiaries will be identified through detailed need-based assessments, and personalised care plans will be developed for each individual. The implementation process will involve regular monitoring and review at both state and district levels to ensure effective delivery of services.
To oversee the initiative, the government will establish a State Aftercare Committee under the Women and Child Development Department. The committee, headed by the department’s Secretary, will be responsible for policy formulation, supervision, and monitoring of the scheme’s implementation under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
