Delhi Court to Pronounce Verdict on Sajjan Kumar in 1984 Riots Case on January 22

Delhi court reserves verdict against ex-MP.

A Delhi court has reserved its order in a significant case linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, involving former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar as an accused. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh announced that the final decision would be delivered on January 22, following the conclusion of arguments from both sides. This development marks a critical juncture in the long-pending legal proceedings surrounding one of the darkest chapters in India's post-independence history.

The case stems from two First Information Reports registered in February 2015 by a special investigation team, based on complaints of targeted violence against Sikhs in Delhi's Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas during the riots that erupted after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These FIRs specifically implicate Kumar in incidents of mob violence that resulted in multiple deaths, highlighting allegations of instigation and participation in the attacks.

The first FIR pertains to the brutal killings in Janakpuri on November 1, 1984, where two Sikhs, Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh, were murdered by a violent mob. The second FIR addresses the horrific incident in Vikaspuri on November 2, 1984, involving Gurcharan Singh, who was allegedly set ablaze, leading to his death. These cases represent efforts to address complaints that had remained uninvestigated for decades.

Sajjan Kumar was produced before the court under stringent security arrangements, reflecting the sensitivity and high-profile nature of the proceedings. The reservation of the order comes after exhaustive final arguments, indicating that the court has thoroughly considered the evidence, witness testimonies, and submissions presented over the course of the trial.

As the nation awaits the court's pronouncement on January 22, this case continues to underscore the pursuit of justice for victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for accountability in communal violence cases, reinforcing the judicial system's role in delivering closure to affected families after more than four decades.
