Delhi Congress Demands Immediate Action on Gas Crisis, Targets Petroleum Minister
Delhi Congress protests LPG shortage and price hike, demanding minister’s resignation and relief for citizens.
Congress workers staged a protest on Friday near the BJP headquarters at DDU Marg, highlighting the ongoing LPG cylinder shortage that has affected households across the city. The demonstration was led by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav and drew attention to rising gas prices and the non-availability of CNG cylinders.
The protest began at Rajiv Bhawan, the DPCC office, where party workers gathered before marching to the BJP headquarters. Participants shouted slogans against the central government, calling for the resignation of Union Petroleum Minister Hardip Singh Puri. Women party workers symbolically carried gas cylinders on their heads and shoulders to dramatize the hardships faced by citizens.
Speaking at the protest, Yadav criticized the central government for what he described as inadequate measures to address the crisis. “In the ‘Amrit Kaal’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, people have been forced to prepare meals on stoves due to the non-availability of CNG gas cylinders,” he said. To underline the point, Yadav and several women protesters prepared tea and rotis on an earthen stove during the demonstration, drawing media attention to the alleged slow pace of development.

The protest led to the temporary detention of Yadav and several other Congress workers by the police at IP Estate station. All were later released. Yadav also accused Delhi’s administration of failing to fulfill promises made prior to Holi, when Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi’s Lok Sabha representatives had allegedly pledged free gas cylinders for citizens. Instead, the cost of cooking gas has increased, he said.
This demonstration follows a city-wide protest on Thursday, where Congress workers staged rallies outside gas agencies at 258 locations across 14 districts. Participants demanded an immediate rollback of the hiked LPG prices, reiterating concerns about the affordability and accessibility of essential cooking fuel for ordinary households.
Analysts note that rising LPG prices have emerged as a politically sensitive issue ahead of elections in several states. Public frustration over fuel availability and costs continues to provide opposition parties with a platform to challenge the central government’s economic policies. The Congress protests in Delhi reflect wider concerns among citizens who are struggling with increasing household expenses.
