Delhi CM Gupta Extends Ramleela And Durga Puja Timings Till Midnight
Cultural events in Delhi can now continue till 12 am under new rules.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday that cultural events like Ramleela and Durga Puja can now continue until midnight, a significant extension from the previous 10 p.m. curfew, as part of her vision to foster “Ram Rajya” in the capital. Speaking at an event, Gupta emphasised the importance of Hindu festivals, questioning, “Which Ramleela ends at 10 p.m.?” She compared Delhi’s restrictions to Gujarat, where events like Dandiya are permitted all night, and urged Delhiites to work toward a culturally vibrant city reflective of ideal governance inspired by Lord Rama’s principles.
The Delhi government, with approval from Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena, issued an order on Monday extending the permissible hours for loudspeakers and public address systems during Ramleela, Durga Puja, Dussehra, and related events from September 22 to October 3. Organisers must comply with the Noise Pollution Rules, ensuring sound levels in residential areas do not exceed 45 decibels. The decision addresses long-standing demands from Ramleela committees, as noted by Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who thanked Gupta and Saxena for facilitating the change.
Gupta’s announcement comes amid efforts to balance cultural expression with urban regulations in Delhi, a city of over 20 million where festivals are a vital part of community life. The relaxation aims to enhance participation in these events, which draw thousands annually, while maintaining public order. The move has been welcomed by organisers but has sparked discussions about noise pollution and residential concerns.

The extended hours signal the government’s push to promote cultural heritage, with Gupta framing it as a step toward “Ram Rajya”, a concept symbolising just and harmonious governance. As Delhi prepares for the festive season, authorities have urged organisers to adhere to noise guidelines to ensure a balance between celebration and civic responsibility.
