Delhi Assembly Speaker Launches Major Tree Plantation Drive In Rohini

Delhi Assembly Speaker leads Rohini plantation drive for environmental awareness.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday launched a mega tree plantation drive at Chitragupt Park, DDA District Park, Sector-14, Rohini, highlighting the importance of not only planting trees but also ensuring their long-term survival. He said the success of any green campaign should be measured by the number of saplings that grow into healthy trees rather than the number planted during an event.

Addressing the gathering, Gupta said tree plantation represents a commitment towards future generations and requires continuous care and responsibility. He stressed that planting a sapling is only the beginning of the process, and protecting it until it matures should remain the primary focus of environmental initiatives. He appealed to citizens to actively participate in nurturing trees and improving the city’s green cover.

The plantation drive was organised by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in association with voluntary organisations to encourage environmental sustainability and public participation. During the programme, more than 500 indigenous Jamun saplings were planted with the aim of strengthening Delhi’s ecosystem through native tree species. Officials, environmentalists, volunteers and local residents participated in the initiative.

Gupta said Rohini has developed into one of Delhi’s greener areas due to continued public involvement and sustained environmental efforts. He called for expanding the campaign beyond parks and making it a broader movement involving households and communities across the city. He encouraged residents to organise plantation activities in their neighbourhoods and become partners in conservation efforts.

Emphasising the importance of planting native species, the Assembly Speaker said trees such as Neem and Jamun are better suited to Delhi’s local environment and should be promoted widely. He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, describing it as an initiative that connects environmental responsibility with emotional and cultural values.

Gupta said planting and caring for a tree in honour of one’s mother can become a lasting symbol of love, gratitude and environmental awareness. The event was attended by DDA officials, public representatives, social organisation members and local residents who pledged support for creating a cleaner, greener and healthier Delhi.
