Delhi Assembly Breach: Accused Was Seeking Ministerial Help to Find Missing Nephew

Accused sought minister’s help to trace missing nephew.

The family of the man accused of breaching security at the Delhi Assembly said he was desperately seeking help from a minister to trace his missing nephew before the startling incident unfolded on Monday. The family’s account adds a new and personal dimension to the case, which has triggered concerns over both security and the accused’s state of mind.

The accused has been identified by police as Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Puranpur in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district, who reportedly drove his SUV through a barrier at Gate No. 2 of the assembly complex and accessed the premises, placing a bouquet near the Speaker’s car before leaving. Three people, including Sarabjit, were detained in connection with the breach.

Family members told investigators that Sarabjit had been extremely distressed after his nephew, Harman Singh, a college student from Hari Nagar in west Delhi, went missing early last week. They said Sarabjit had been travelling across cities, visiting places such as Bareilly and Nangal, in a bid to find the missing boy.

According to relatives, the man believed that approaching a high‑ranking official or a minister might help him in the search, prompting him to head to the national capital. The family said his behaviour had been increasingly erratic and that he had not communicated clearly with them about his plans or whereabouts in the days before the breach.

Police also noted that Sarabjit appeared incoherent and disoriented when apprehended, telling officers he had been fed something and insisting he did not intend harm — claims being investigated as part of the ongoing probe. Authorities are examining his statements and the missing person case involving his nephew.

The incident has raised serious concerns about security preparedness at one of the capital’s most sensitive government institutions. A high‑level inquiry has been ordered to assess how the breach occurred and to review protocols, even as investigators continue to piece together the motives and circumstances behind Sarabjit’s actions.
