Delhi Airport Sees Series of Safety Incidents, Latest Ground Collision Under Probe
Series of aviation incidents raise safety concerns at busy airport
A ground collision between aircraft at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday has raised fresh concerns over aviation safety, following a series of recent incidents at one of India’s busiest airports. A SpiceJet aircraft taxiing after landing collided with a stationary Akasa Air plane at Terminal 1 around 2:15 pm. While no injuries were reported, both aircraft sustained damage and were subsequently grounded.
According to initial reports, the SpiceJet flight had arrived from Leh and was moving toward its designated gate when it made contact with the Akasa Air aircraft, which was preparing for departure to Hyderabad. The impact resulted in damage to the right winglet of the SpiceJet plane and the left-hand horizontal stabiliser of the Akasa aircraft. Passengers and crew from both flights were safely disembarked, and airline authorities initiated alternative arrangements for onwards travel.
Akasa Air, in an official statement, said its aircraft was stationary at the time of the incident and confirmed that all safety protocols were followed after the collision. The airline added that the matter has been reported to relevant authorities and is currently under investigation. SpiceJet also acknowledged the incident, describing it as a ground occurrence during taxiing and confirming structural damage to both aircraft involved.

The incident comes amid a series of safety-related events reported at Delhi airport over the past year, including emergency landings, engine-related issues, and runway breaches. Notable cases include an engine failure scare on an IndiGo flight in March 2026, engine damage to an Air India aircraft earlier this year, and a wrong-runway landing by an Ariana flight in November 2025. The latest episode underscores growing concerns around operational safety and highlights the need for stringent monitoring and adherence to aviation protocols.
