Delhi Adds 500 Electric Buses, Fleet Reaches 4,000 This Weekend

Delhi government expands electric bus fleet to reduce pollution and improve urban transport.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sunday that the city will roll out 500 new electric buses, increasing the capital’s e-bus fleet to 4,000, making it the largest in India. The announcement came after Gupta laid the foundation stone for development works worth Rs 400 crore in Matiala constituency, West Delhi.

The chief minister highlighted Delhi’s commitment to clean mobility, stating that electric buses now serve nearly 40% of the Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) daily ridership. Supported by central schemes like FAME II and PM E-DRIVE, the city operates a large fleet of blue electric buses and has recently launched initiatives such as the DEVi (Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector) scheme for last-mile connectivity and electric double-decker tourist buses.

Gupta reiterated the government’s target to increase the number of electric buses to 11,000 within the next two years, aiming to make them available across all corners of the city. She emphasised that rural and agrarian pockets of Delhi, including unauthorised colonies and slum clusters, will benefit from these measures alongside other development projects, boosting overall urban and social infrastructure.

Addressing development efforts in Matiala, the chief minister said her government had revived the previously paralysed Rural Development Board and sanctioned projects worth Rs 1,700 crore. She lauded West Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Matiala MLA Sandeep Sehrawat for their role in expediting local development works, highlighting the government’s focus on addressing long-standing civic and infrastructural issues.

Delhi’s electric bus expansion is part of a broader environmental strategy to reduce urban pollution and carbon emissions. The government has already sent a proposal to the Centre’s Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) seeking the procurement of 3,300 additional low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses. CESL, established in 2020, supports India’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

The addition of 500 e-buses is expected to not only improve urban mobility but also strengthen Delhi’s position as a pioneer in sustainable public transport in India, benefiting commuters while reducing the city’s pollution levels.
