Defence Chief of India and Navy Chiefs Appointed, To Take Office By Month-End

India appoints new defence and Navy chiefs who will assume office by month-end.

The Government of India has announced key leadership changes in its top military hierarchy, appointing Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of Naval Staff. Both officials are set to assume charge by the end of the month, marking a significant transition in the country’s defence leadership.

Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani will succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes on May 30. In addition to serving as the Chief of Defence Staff, Subramani will also function as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs from the date he assumes office. The appointment places him at the centre of India’s military coordination structure, overseeing integration across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

A decorated officer with over 35 years of service, Subramani’s military career spans a wide range of operational and strategic assignments. Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985 after training at the National Defence Academy, he has held key command and staff positions across various formations. His experience includes serving in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, strategic roles at Army Headquarters, and overseas diplomatic defence assignments as India’s Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan.

His academic background includes advanced military education at the Joint Services Command Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi. He also holds a Master’s degree from King’s College London and an M.Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University. Throughout his career, he has been awarded several high honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.

In a parallel appointment, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been named the next Chief of Naval Staff. He will succeed Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is set to complete his tenure on May 31. Swaminathan’s elevation comes as part of the broader leadership reshuffle aimed at ensuring continuity in command across the armed forces. The new appointments are expected to strengthen joint operational planning and strategic coordination among India’s three services, particularly at a time when regional security dynamics and modernisation efforts remain key defence priorities.
