Death Toll Increases to 13 in Yamuna Expressway Multi-Vehicle Fire Accident

13 dead, 60 injured in multi-vehicle pile-up and fire on Yamuna Expressway due to dense fog.

A tragic multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district claimed at least 13 lives after several vehicles caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday. The accident occurred near Milestone 127 under the jurisdiction of the Baldev police station, where dense fog severely reduced visibility, leading to a chain collision involving 11 vehicles.

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed the revised death toll and said that 60 injured persons are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. Among the victims identified so far are individuals from Prayagraj, Gonda, and Azamgarh, while efforts are ongoing to establish the identities of the remaining deceased.

Following the collision, a massive blaze engulfed at least 10 vehicles, complicating rescue operations. Fourteen fire tenders were deployed, and it took several hours to bring the fire under control. Traffic on the Agra–Noida stretch of the expressway was fully restored after an intensive four-hour rescue and clearance operation.

The district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) has been tasked with submitting a detailed report examining the causes of the accident and recommending preventive measures. Police are also in the process of registering an FIR in connection with the case.

Chief Medical Officer of Mathura, Dr Radha Vallabh, said post-mortem examinations are underway and DNA sampling will be used to identify the deceased. He noted that the exact number of bodies is yet to be officially confirmed as the mandatory panchnama process is still ongoing, with full medical teams deployed on-site.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognisance of the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the families of each deceased victim. Authorities have attributed the accident primarily to poor visibility caused by dense fog, once again highlighting safety concerns on high-speed expressways during winter conditions.
