Deadly Roadworks Chaos: IRF Slams India’s Shocking Safety Failures!
Unmarked diversions and missing signs spark fatal crashes, IRF demands urgent action.
The India chapter of the International Road Federation (IRF-IC) has raised a red flag over rampant safety violations in road construction zones across India, linking poorly managed sites to a surge in fatal crashes. IRF-IC President Akhilesh Srivastava highlighted the absence of critical safety measures like advance warning signs, reflective tapes, barricades, and proper lighting, which have led to deadly accidents, particularly at night.
Srivastava pointed to a recent tragedy on the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, where an unmarked diversion caused a head-on collision, killing both vehicle occupants. He noted frequent issues like missing flagmen, inadequate speed calming measures, and poor lane separation, resulting in head-on crashes and wrong-side driving.
IRF-IC is calling for mandatory adherence to IRC Work Zone Safety Guidelines by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), State Public Works Departments, and private contractors. The federation demands rigorous safety audits before, during, and after construction, public disclosure of work zone plans, and strict penalties, including criminal liability, for violations leading to fatalities. Immediate action is critical to prevent further loss of life.
