Damoh Collector Exposes Internal Espionage Ring Using Clever Sting Operation

Damoh collector catches staff eavesdropping on confidential conversations using telephone receivers.

A suspected internal surveillance racket operating from inside the district collector's office has been uncovered in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district after confidential government discussions were allegedly leaked in real time. The discovery was made by Pratap Narayan Yadav, who reportedly exposed the operation after noticing that details of a planned surprise inspection had reached outside individuals within minutes of the discussion taking place inside his chamber.

According to officials, the suspicion arose when confidential information related to an inspection plan was allegedly leaked before any officer had even left the collector's office. Sources said the newly appointed collector became alarmed after receiving indications that an external caller already knew about the proposed inspection almost immediately after the closed-door discussion. The incident prompted concerns over possible unauthorised monitoring of sensitive administrative conversations taking place within the Collectorate.

To verify his suspicions, Collector Yadav allegedly devised a trap inside his office chamber. As part of the operation, he reportedly played a loud news broadcast on his mobile phone before stepping out and moving toward the adjoining staff area. Officials claim the same audio could then be heard through another telephone receiver in a nearby room, suggesting that conversations from the collector's chamber were being intercepted through the office communication system.

The revelation has exposed what authorities suspect was a covert setup in which staff members in the adjacent personal assistant section allegedly used telephone receivers to listen to confidential meetings, discussions and official calls taking place inside the collector's office. Investigators are now examining whether sensitive government information may have been routinely passed on to outside individuals over an extended period. Officials fear the alleged breach may have compromised administrative secrecy in one of the district’s most important government offices.

Following the discovery, immediate disciplinary action was initiated against multiple staff members. Assistant Grade-3 employee Sachin Khare was suspended with immediate effect, while clerk Ajay Kumar Asati was reportedly sent back to his parent department in the education sector. Office attendant Jaydev Ahirwar was also removed from the collectorate. Authorities have seized the telephone receivers believed to have been used in the alleged monitoring operation and sent them for forensic examination.

The incident has triggered serious concerns within administrative circles regarding the security of government communications and the possibility of long-term information leaks from district offices. Officials familiar with the matter described the case as a major breach of confidentiality that could have affected official inspections, enforcement drives and sensitive governance-related decisions. Further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the alleged surveillance system and whether additional individuals were involved in the operation.
