Cyclone Montha to Bring Heavy Rain to West Bengal, IMD Issues Warnings
Heavy rainfall, landslides expected in multiple districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall across several districts of West Bengal from Tuesday to Friday, October 28-31, 2025, due to Cyclone Montha, a weather system currently intensifying over the Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD’s special bulletin, the cyclone is expected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday night. The impending storm is set to bring significant weather disturbances to West Bengal, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advisories.
The IMD has advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea along and off the West Bengal coast until Thursday, October 30, 2025, due to the anticipated rough conditions. The department has also warned of potential landslides in the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, alongside the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas of the plains, which could disrupt daily life and infrastructure.
In south Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected across many areas, with heavy rain predicted in North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad districts from Tuesday to Friday. The IMD has highlighted that these regions may experience significant downpours, necessitating preparedness among local authorities and residents.

In north Bengal, the situation is expected to be more severe, with heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) forecast for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts. Additionally, heavy rainfall is likely in Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda districts, raising concerns about potential flooding and related hazards in these areas.
As Cyclone Montha approaches, the IMD’s warnings underscore the need for vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall, landslides, and waterlogging across West Bengal. Local administrations have been urged to prepare for potential disruptions, while residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of adverse weather.
