CPI(M) Leader Bikash Bhattacharya Accuses TMC Of Driving West Bengal Into Debt Trap
CPI(M) accuses TMC of pushing West Bengal into debt trap.
Senior CPI(M) leader Bikash Bhattacharya on Friday accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of pushing West Bengal into a “debt trap,” alleging fiscal mismanagement and unsustainable borrowing under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Bhattacharya claimed that the state’s rising debt burden has reached alarming levels, arguing that excessive loans are being used to finance recurring expenditures rather than long-term asset creation. He said such a pattern could weaken the state’s financial stability and limit its ability to invest in development projects in the future.
The CPI(M) leader also criticised what he described as a lack of fiscal discipline, alleging that the government has prioritised populist schemes over structural economic reforms. According to him, this approach risks placing additional pressure on the state’s finances, particularly at a time when revenue generation remains constrained.

In response, TMC leaders have consistently defended the state’s fiscal strategy, stating that borrowing is necessary to sustain welfare programmes and infrastructure spending. They argue that many of the financial challenges stem from reduced central allocations and outstanding dues from the Union government, which they say have strained the state’s resources.
West Bengal’s debt levels have been a recurring point of political contention, with opposition parties frequently raising concerns about long-term sustainability. Economists note that while higher borrowing can support growth if directed toward productive investments, it also requires careful management to avoid future fiscal stress.
The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions in the state, where economic performance and governance remain key issues ahead of upcoming elections. As debates over fiscal policy intensify, both the ruling TMC and opposition parties are seeking to shape the narrative around economic management and accountability.
