Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Lok Sabha MP Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passed away late Friday night at a private hospital in Hyderabad, succumbing to age-related ailments at 83. The prominent leftist, who served as CPI’s general secretary from 2012 to 2019, left a lasting legacy in Indian politics, particularly in Telangana, where he was a key figure in championing people’s struggles.
Born in Mahabubnagar district, Reddy’s political career spanned decades, marked by his election to the Lok Sabha twice and his leadership in shaping the CPI’s national presence. Party sources highlighted his unwavering commitment to social justice, noting his pivotal role in grassroots movements advocating for workers’ and farmers’ rights. His tenure as general secretary saw the CPI navigate complex political landscapes, strengthening its influence in coalition politics.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow, describing Sudhakar Reddy as a “beacon of Left ideology” whose contributions to public welfare were unparalleled. Cabinet colleagues, alongside Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao and other leaders, joined in mourning, lauding his dedication to the marginalized. “His leadership in people’s struggles inspired generations,” Rao said in a statement.
