Court Adjourns Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Case To Aug 7 Over Cruelty And Adultery Claims
Court adjourns Vijay-Sangeetha divorce case amid allegations of cruelty and adultery.
The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK leader Vijay and his estranged wife Sangeetha Sornalingam were adjourned by the Chengalpattu Mahila Court until August 7. The matter came up for hearing this week but concluded without any substantive developments, with the court scheduling the next date for further proceedings as the high-profile case continues to draw public attention.
In her petition filed under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, Sangeetha Sornalingam has sought dissolution of her 27-year marriage, citing allegations of prolonged mental cruelty, emotional neglect, marital discord, and adultery. The petition, as reported, claims that the breakdown of the marriage has been ongoing for several years and has significantly affected family stability and personal well-being.
The plea also invokes the legal principle of “constructive desertion,” arguing that a spouse’s conduct—without physical separation—can amount to abandonment if it creates an intolerable living environment. According to the filing, Sangeetha has alleged that repeated emotional strain and behavioural patterns left her with no reasonable option but to pursue legal separation.

Further allegations in the petition include claims that Vijay was involved in a relationship with a female co-star, though no individual has been named in the filing. It is also alleged that despite assurances that the relationship would end, the actor-politician continued public appearances and travel with the person concerned, which reportedly led to emotional distress and public embarrassment for the family.
The petition additionally raises concerns over financial restrictions, claiming that certain facilities and financial independence previously available to Sangeetha were curtailed. Legal representatives for both parties had reportedly sought permission for virtual appearances citing logistical challenges and security concerns, but the family court rejected the request, directing that personal attendance is required.
Vijay and Sangeetha, who married in 1999 and have two children, have long been regarded as a prominent public couple in Tamil cinema and politics. The ongoing proceedings have attracted significant attention due to Vijay’s dual role as a leading film personality and political figure associated with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, with the next hearing scheduled for August 7.
