Congress Worker Dies After Iron Rod Falls At Rahul Gandhi's Dehradun Event

Congress Worker Dies In Dehradun Event Accident

A 65-year-old Congress worker died after an iron rod from a temporary tent structure fell on him during preparations for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled programme at the Bannu School grounds in Dehradun on Thursday evening. The incident took place while workers were making arrangements for the event, leaving the party member with serious injuries. The tragedy occurred a day before Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to visit the venue for an interaction programme with students. The deceased was identified as Amar Mehta, according to Congress Uttarakhand state vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana.

Mehta was reportedly involved in supervising preparations at the event site when an iron rod from the temporary tent suddenly fell. The falling structure struck him on the head, causing critical injuries. People present at the venue immediately rushed to assist him and arranged for medical help. Following the accident, Mehta was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead after examining his condition, Dhasmana said. The incident left Congress workers and organisers at the venue shocked, as preparations were underway for a major political programme involving the party’s senior leadership.

The Congress state vice-president confirmed the details of the incident and expressed grief over the death of the party worker. The circumstances that led to the collapse of the iron rod are expected to be examined, with authorities likely to look into whether adequate safety measures were followed during the installation of the temporary structure. Temporary tents and stages used for large public gatherings often require careful inspection to prevent accidents. The incident occurred ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled participation in the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ (Voice of Students) programme at the Bannu School grounds on Friday.

During the event, the Congress leader is expected to interact with students and discuss issues related to education, including concerns over alleged question paper leaks. The programme is aimed at providing a platform for students to raise issues affecting them. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party have frequently highlighted concerns related to examinations, recruitment processes and opportunities for young people. The party has raised questions over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and demanded stronger systems to ensure transparency and accountability. The Dehradun programme is part of Gandhi’s broader outreach efforts involving students and young voters.

The death of Amar Mehta has cast a shadow over the preparations for the event. Congress leaders and workers expressed condolences to his family, remembering him as a dedicated party member who was involved in organising the programme. The tragedy has also brought renewed focus on the importance of ensuring safety standards at political gatherings and public events. Large-scale political events usually involve extensive arrangements, including temporary seating areas, tents, lighting systems, stages and security installations.

While such structures are designed for short-term use, officials and organisers are expected to ensure they are properly installed and inspected before public gatherings begin. As preparations continue for Rahul Gandhi’s visit, the incident remains a major concern for organisers and party members. Further details about the accident, including any official inquiry or action following the structural failure, are awaited. The Congress has expressed its condolences over the loss of Amar Mehta, while authorities are expected to assess safety arrangements at the venue to prevent similar incidents in the future.
