The ceremony took place at the Congress headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, where Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, alongside other prominent leaders, offered floral tributes to honor Kesri’s legacy.
Sitaram Kesri, a stalwart from Bihar, served as Congress president from 1996 to 1998. His tenure came to an end at the same headquarters when the Congress Working Committee replaced him with Sonia Gandhi in 1998. Kesri passed away in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the party’s values and grassroots mobilization. Known for his deep ties to Bihar’s political landscape, Kesri worked closely with notable leaders like Bhagwat Jha Azad, who later became a state chief minister.
Kesri’s contributions extended beyond his presidency. He served as president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee in 1973 and held the position of treasurer for the All India Congress Committee (AICC) from 1980 for a decade, showcasing his organizational prowess and commitment to the party’s growth. His leadership during challenging times helped strengthen Congress’s presence in Bihar and beyond.
