Congress Leader Alleges Women Felt Unsafe Under Rahul Mamkootathil

Shahanas reveals ignored misconduct complaints against Youth Congress leader.

Congress cultural wing leader M A Shahanas has leveled serious allegations against the party's handling of complaints regarding Rahul Mamkootathil, asserting that women members felt insecure during his tenure as Youth Congress state president. Speaking to reporters in Kozhikode on Wednesday, Shahanas recounted an incident from the farmers' agitation years ago, where Mamkootathil messaged her upon learning of her travel to Delhi, suggesting they journey together. She promptly responded and informed then-president Shafi Parambil, who allegedly failed to acknowledge the matter.

Shahanas emphasized her opposition to Mamkootathil's appointment, warning Parambil that such leadership would compromise women's safety within the organization. Despite her concerns, she claimed her input was dismissed, leading to ridicule instead of action. When recent controversies surrounding Mamkootathil surfaced, Shahanas reminded Parambil of her earlier message, receiving only a dismissive sad smiley in reply. She alleged that numerous women in the Youth Congress shared similar unsettling experiences.

Further, Shahanas disclosed that J S Akhil was the preferred candidate endorsed by the late Oommen Chandy for the presidency. She maintained that multiple female members objected to Mamkootathil's elevation, and she possesses evidence to counter any denials from Parambil. Questioning Parambil's advocacy on women's issues, Shahanas demanded an explanation for appointing Mamkootathil despite widespread complaints about his conduct, including during Parambil's own presidency, where women reportedly lacked freedom to operate.

In a detailed Facebook post, Shahanas depicted the party's internal environment as antagonistic toward women who voice grievances, with leaders purportedly prioritizing the protection of male colleagues. She expressed disillusionment with the Congress organization, which she believed humiliated her rather than offering support. Shahanas highlighted an ongoing issue where the individual accused of misbehavior remains shielded in the district committee office.

Shahanas condemned certain party workers for endorsing Mamkootathil amid the accusations while disparaging the complainants. She urged them to recognize the gravity of defending someone implicated in criminal acts at the expense of victims. These revelations add a significant layer to the ongoing scrutiny of Mamkootathil's leadership and the party's response to internal misconduct allegations.
