Congress Jibes At PM Modi Over US-India Trade Deal, Cites ‘Namaste Trump’ Remark
Congress criticises the US-India trade agreement, alleging Prime Minister Modi’s personal diplomacy failed to secure India’s interests.
The Congress on Friday took a sharp swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the recently announced India–US trade deal, claiming that the agreement favours Washington more than New Delhi. Using a pointed political metaphor, the party said “‘Namaste Trump scored over Howdy Modi’,” alleging that the much-touted personal rapport between the two leaders has failed to translate into tangible gains for India.
Senior Congress leaders argued that the trade arrangement reflects an imbalance, with India making concessions while receiving limited reciprocal benefits. The party questioned whether the government had adequately protected domestic interests, particularly in manufacturing, small businesses and employment, areas that have been central to the ruling BJP’s economic narrative.
The opposition also invoked the phrase “dost dost na raha” to suggest that the strategic warmth once projected between Prime Minister Modi and former US President Donald Trump has not delivered on its promise. Congress spokespersons said the agreement exposes the gap between high-profile diplomacy and the realities of trade negotiations, urging the government to make the full details of the deal public.

In response, the BJP defended the agreement, asserting that it strengthens Make in India, boosts exports and opens new opportunities for Indian industry. Government leaders have maintained that sensitive sectors remain protected and that the deal reflects a calibrated approach balancing growth with national interest.
Political analysts say the Congress attack fits into a broader opposition strategy to frame foreign policy achievements as symbolic rather than substantive. They note that trade agreements often involve incremental gains and compromises, making them vulnerable to partisan interpretation.
As debate intensifies, the trade deal is set to become a fresh political flashpoint, with the ruling party highlighting long-term economic benefits while the opposition presses for greater transparency and accountability.
