Colours, Dance, and Gulal at 14,300 Feet — ITBP's Pangong Lake Holi Goes Viral Overnight
ITBP troops celebrate Holi with Pangong border villagers at 14,300 feet in viral, heartwarming video.
Personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police celebrated the festival of Holi at a remote Himalayan outpost near Pangong Lake, located at an altitude of about 14,300 feet. The colourful celebration, held amid the region’s icy terrain and freezing temperatures, brought together ITBP soldiers and residents from nearby border villages. Videos of the event shared on social media quickly gained attention online, capturing jawans dancing, applying gulal on each other and enjoying the festive atmosphere despite the harsh weather conditions.
The celebration was organised by troops from the ITBP’s North West Frontier unit stationed in the high-altitude region. Footage posted online shows soldiers enthusiastically dancing to music and exchanging colours with fellow personnel and villagers, turning the otherwise stark landscape into a lively gathering. The visuals highlight the morale and camaraderie among troops stationed in some of the country’s most challenging environments, where personnel often spend long periods away from their families while guarding India’s remote borders.
Children from nearby villages also took part in the event, performing a cultural programme that added to the festive spirit. Their lively dance performances drew applause from both soldiers and villagers who had gathered to mark the occasion. The participation of local communities reflected the close ties between ITBP personnel and residents of border areas, where security forces frequently engage in outreach and community-building activities.

The ITBP shared glimpses of the celebration through its official social media handle, describing the event as a unique Holi celebration in one of the world’s highest and coldest inhabited regions. In the post, the force noted that troops celebrated the festival “amid the frozen expanse of Pangong Lake,” alongside residents of what it referred to as “vibrant villages” along the frontier. The post also highlighted how local children’s performances added colour and warmth to the otherwise freezing environment.
Pangong Lake, a high-altitude saltwater lake that stretches across eastern Ladakh and into Tibet, is located in a strategically sensitive area near the India–China border. The region often experiences extreme weather conditions, with temperatures dropping well below freezing during winter months. Despite these challenges, security personnel remain deployed throughout the year to monitor and protect the frontier.
Festivals like Holi provide rare moments of celebration and relaxation for soldiers stationed in such remote locations. By sharing the occasion with local villagers, ITBP troops not only marked a traditional Indian festival but also strengthened bonds with communities living along the border. The viral video of the celebration has drawn widespread appreciation online, with many praising the spirit and dedication of the personnel guarding the country’s high-altitude frontiers.
