Powerful quake kills 111 across Colombia, officials say
At least 111 people were killed after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, according to a report by news agency Associated Press. The strong tremor caused buildings to collapse, trapped residents beneath debris and forced people to evacuate their homes as authorities faced a critical situation in the affected region. The epicentre of the earthquake was located in San José del Palmar, a community of around 4,800 people in Colombia’s Chocó region. The area is situated approximately 400 kilometres west of the capital, Bogotá.
The location of the epicentre has placed the relatively small community at the centre of the disaster, with reports indicating significant destruction and people becoming trapped following the collapse of buildings. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 107 kilometres. The depth of the quake and its considerable magnitude contributed to the strength of the tremors experienced across the region. The earthquake was also felt in neighbouring Ecuador, indicating that the impact of the seismic event extended beyond the immediate area around the epicentre.
The initial reports indicate a substantial human toll, with at least 111 people confirmed dead and several others injured. Some residents were reportedly trapped beneath rubble after buildings collapsed. The destruction also prompted people to leave their homes as they sought safety following the powerful shaking.
