CJP Campaign Propels 'E20 Janta Party' To Instagram Fame And Growing Support
Viral campaign boosts Instagram follower growth
A new social media movement opposing ethanol-blended fuel has gained significant traction online, with the satirical 'E20 Janta Party' rapidly attracting followers on Instagram. The digital campaign has emerged in the wake of the viral 'Cockroach Janta Party' movement, which became widely known during nationwide protests over alleged NEET paper leaks. The Instagram page of the E20 Janta Party has witnessed a sharp rise in popularity, amassing more than 218,000 followers at the time of reporting, with the number continuing to increase.
The page has positioned itself as a satirical online community representing people opposed to the mandatory use of E20 fuel and advocating greater consumer choice. The group's primary demands include giving consumers the option to purchase 100 per cent petrol instead of ethanol-blended fuel at a discounted price. It has also called for the resignation of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has recently faced criticism on social media over the government's push for E20 fuel.
The movement appears to have adopted a style similar to the Cockroach Janta Party, which gained widespread attention after remarks made by the Chief Justice of India during hearings related to the NEET examination controversy. That online campaign evolved into a broader youth-driven movement, using satire and memes to amplify concerns over examination irregularities. The E20 Janta Party has similarly relied on humorous posts, memes and social media engagement to express dissatisfaction with ethanol-blended fuel.

Supporters have questioned the impact of E20 fuel on vehicle performance, mileage and maintenance costs, while calling for greater transparency and flexibility in fuel choices. The government has been promoting E20 fuel as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, support domestic ethanol production and lower carbon emissions. Ethanol blending is also aimed at benefiting sugarcane farmers by creating additional demand for ethanol produced from agricultural feedstock.
However, the transition has generated debate among vehicle owners, particularly regarding compatibility with older vehicles and concerns over long-term engine performance. Automobile manufacturers have gradually introduced E20-compatible models, while the government has maintained that the transition is being implemented in phases. The online campaign reflects how social media has increasingly become a platform for public discourse on policy issues, with satirical accounts often drawing large audiences and influencing wider conversations.
While the E20 Janta Party is not a registered political organisation, its rapid growth demonstrates the ability of digital communities to mobilise support around specific issues. As discussions over ethanol-blended fuel continue, the government's push towards cleaner and more sustainable fuel alternatives is expected to remain under public scrutiny. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of the E20 Janta Party underscores the expanding role of online campaigns in shaping public opinion on policy decisions.
