CM Urges Centre To Invest ₹1 Lakh Crore Each In Six Major Metro Cities

CM seeks massive central funding for development of six metro cities.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has called on the Centre to invest ₹1 lakh crore each in India’s six major metropolitan cities, arguing that they function as the country’s primary economic engines and require large-scale infrastructure upgrades to match global urban standards. Speaking at the 11th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister proposed the creation of an “M6 Cities Taskforce” to coordinate the transformation of Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru into globally competitive urban centres.

He said these cities collectively house around 10% of India’s population but generate nearly a quarter of the country’s GDP. Revanth Reddy emphasised that targeted investment in these metropolitan hubs should be seen not as expenditure but as a long-term economic asset. He argued that strengthening urban infrastructure, mobility systems, and governance frameworks in these cities would significantly enhance India’s overall productivity, global competitiveness, and employment generation capacity.

He urged the Centre to establish a dedicated national-level mechanism with sufficient autonomy and speed to execute large-scale urban transformation projects. According to him, fragmented planning across states and agencies has slowed down the development of India’s largest cities, which continue to face pressure from rapid urbanisation, migration, and infrastructure gaps.

The Chief Minister also placed a series of additional demands for Telangana, including central support for the Bharat Future City project and financial assistance for Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2. He sought approval for a 12-lane expressway connecting Future City to Bandar Port, as well as funding for the Musi River rejuvenation and the Regional Ring Road project.

Further, he requested clearances and support for the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad, and assistance under the India Semiconductor Mission. He said these initiatives are critical for positioning Telangana as a leading hub in infrastructure, education, and high-tech manufacturing within India’s broader growth framework.
