CM Stalin Opens 700 New Tenements on Walltax Road, Chennai
CM Stalin inaugurates 700-tenement housing complex on Walltax Road, Chennai, built by CMDA at Rs 133 crore cost.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a new 700-tenement housing complex on Wall Tax Road in north Chennai on March 11, 2026, as part of broader development initiatives under the North Chennai Development Plan. The project, constructed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) at a cost of ₹133 crore, was formally opened during an event on the road, marking a key step in improving urban housing for lower-income residents in the area.
The housing complex, located on Thanneer Thotti Street off Wall Tax Road, features two multi-storey blocks with ground plus nine floors. Amenities include dedicated parking for two-wheelers, eight lifts, adequate water storage facilities, and open spaces to enhance livability. The development aims to provide modern, safe accommodation while addressing long-standing issues of overcrowding and substandard living conditions in parts of north Chennai, a region targeted for focused infrastructure upgrades.
This inauguration forms part of a larger package of projects worth ₹179.04 crore that Stalin dedicated on the same day, alongside laying foundation stones for additional works valued at ₹51.01 crore. The initiatives fall under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam (North Chennai Development Plan), which seeks to transform the northern parts of the city through improved housing, roads, drainage, and other civic infrastructure to benefit slum dwellers and economically weaker sections.

The event highlights the Tamil Nadu government's ongoing commitment to slum redevelopment and urban renewal, building on previous efforts such as earlier tenement projects in nearby areas like Seven Wells and Stanley Hospital vicinity. Officials noted that such housing schemes help relocate families from encroachments and pavements, improving traffic flow and public safety along busy corridors like Wall Tax Road while offering beneficiaries access to better facilities.
As allotment processes begin for the new units, the project is expected to provide much-needed relief to families in the vicinity, contributing to the broader goal of inclusive urban growth in Chennai. Authorities have emphasized timely completion and quality in similar future developments to ensure sustainable benefits for residents.
