CM Stalin Extends Free Meals to One Lakh More Sanitation Workers in Tamil Nadu
CM M.K. Stalin broadens welfare initiative, providing free meals to frontline sanitation staff across the state.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday announced a major expansion of the state’s free meal programme for sanitation workers, extending benefits to nearly one lakh additional conservancy staff employed in urban local bodies. The initiative aims to strengthen welfare support for frontline civic workers who maintain public health and hygiene across towns and cities.
The expanded coverage was formally launched at Polivakkam in Tiruvallur district. Under the revised scheme, 48,768 workers in 24 municipal corporations, 29,556 in 145 municipalities, and 21,910 in 479 town panchayats will now receive free meals. Initially, the programme was limited to the Greater Chennai Corporation, benefiting 29,455 conservancy staff.
In his address, CM Stalin emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the working and living conditions of sanitation workers. He highlighted that the state has already introduced welfare measures such as housing facilities, small business loans, life insurance coverage, and educational support for workers’ children, with more initiatives planned in the future.

The scheme’s expansion follows a Cabinet decision taken on August 14, 2025, approving six proposals aimed at improving the welfare of conservancy staff. Officials noted that the move comes after earlier protests by sanitation workers at Chennai’s Ripon Buildings, which had drawn attention to their demands for better support, dignity, and safety at work.
Senior state leaders and officials attended the launch, including Ministers K.N. Nehru, S.M. Nasar, and M. Mathiventhan; MP S. Jagathrakshakan; several legislators; and Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam. Stalin said the free meal programme ensures nutritional security and reduces daily expenses for workers who start their duties early in the morning.
Highlighting the broader social justice agenda, the Chief Minister said the initiative reflects the government’s dedication to protecting vulnerable sections of the workforce. He added that this measure, alongside other welfare schemes, will empower sanitation workers, improve their quality of life, and recognize their essential contribution to the state’s urban governance.
