CM Shivakumar Asks Officials to Bring AI Lessons to Government Schools

Karnataka is exploring plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence training in government schools from Class 6, with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar directing officials to examine ways to implement the programme. The initiative is expected to involve support from the state Information Technology department and private-sector partners.

Shivakumar issued the direction on Monday as part of efforts to introduce AI education at the school level. The proposed programme would aim to familiarise students with artificial intelligence from an early stage and explore how the technology can be incorporated into government school education.

The state government is also examining possible collaboration with private companies for the initiative. Google has expressed interest in providing AI training in schools, prompting officials to study programmes and initiatives implemented by the company in Telangana.

Officials have been asked to examine the Telangana model and assess whether similar initiatives could be adapted for Karnataka’s government schools. The exercise is intended to help the state identify suitable approaches for introducing AI-related learning to students from Class 6 onwards.

The proposed training would involve coordination between the Information Technology department and other stakeholders involved in school education. Further details regarding the curriculum, implementation framework, number of schools and timeline for the programme are yet to be finalised.

The move comes as Karnataka explores ways to expand technology-focused learning in government schools. The government’s assessment of existing AI education initiatives and potential private-sector partnerships will determine how the proposed training programme is taken forward.
