CM Dhami Reacts To Women’s Quota Bill Failure, Raises Concerns Over Empowerment Impact
Dhami criticises Opposition over women’s quota Bill failure, calling it an insult to empowerment.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday strongly criticised opposition parties over the failed passage of the Constitution amendment linked to women’s reservation in Parliament, calling the outcome an “insult” to the country’s women and accusing rivals of obstructing political empowerment.
In a post on social media platform X, Dhami said he heard Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address on the proposed ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ and alleged that opposition parties had exposed what he described as an “anti-women” stance. He argued that blocking the legislation amounted to denying women their rightful political representation.
Dhami further said the failure to pass the constitutional amendment was “unfortunate” and went so far as to compare it to a denial of women’s empowerment in politics. According to him, the opposition’s actions in Parliament reflected a broader disregard for women’s aspirations in governance and public life.

The Chief Minister also criticised the conduct of opposition lawmakers after the bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha, claiming their reactions showed insensitivity. He alleged that celebrations in the House following the bill’s defeat demonstrated “shamelessness,” intensifying the political war of words between the ruling party and opposition blocs.
Dhami asserted that women across India, often referred to as “Nari Shakti,” would not accept such a setback. He said they would respond democratically in the future, framing the issue as one of dignity and long-term political justice rather than short-term parliamentary defeat.
The controversy comes amid a broader national debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill, which failed to secure the required parliamentary majority. The proposed legislation aimed to increase women’s representation in elected bodies but remains stalled despite sustained political attention and support from the ruling establishment.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi reiterated that his government remains committed to advancing women’s reservation and would continue efforts to remove legislative hurdles. He also criticised opposition parties, accusing them of historical resistance to such reforms, while asserting that the government would persist until the objective of enhanced women’s representation is achieved.
