CM Confirms Madhya Pradesh Will Table Uniform Civil Code Bill In Assembly

Madhya Pradesh to table Uniform Civil Code Bill soon.

The Madhya Pradesh government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming monsoon session of the state Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Wednesday. The proposed legislation is expected to be a key agenda item in the session beginning July 20, with the government expressing confidence in its passage.

Chief Minister Yadav said the state is entering the monsoon session with several important policy matters for discussion, among which the UCC Bill holds significant priority. He indicated that the government is hopeful the Bill will be cleared in the same session, describing it as a step aligned with broader national discussions around legal uniformity and social reform.

The Chief Minister has previously stated that the Uniform Civil Code aligns with the vision of “One Nation, One Law” and is intended to promote equality by replacing religion-based personal laws with a common legal framework governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. He maintained that such a system would help ensure equal rights for all citizens regardless of religious background.

To build wider consensus, the state government has formed a high-level committee headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai. The committee has been travelling across Madhya Pradesh to consult different sections of society and gather public opinion on the proposed legal framework. Officials say these consultations are aimed at ensuring that the final draft reflects diverse perspectives.

The Chief Minister said that several states, including Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam, have already moved ahead with similar initiatives, and Madhya Pradesh aims to follow suit. He also underlined that the reform is part of a broader effort to modernise governance and strengthen social equality through a unified legal system.

Separately, Yadav also reviewed preparations for the upcoming NEET examination scheduled for June 21, directing officials to ensure proper arrangements and a smooth conduct of the national-level medical entrance test. The five-day monsoon session of the Assembly is expected to include detailed discussions on the UCC Bill along with other governance and development issues.
