CM Adhikari Announces Freedom Fighters’ Biographies In Syllabus From Primary School To University

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that biographies of prominent freedom fighters will be included in the state’s education curriculum from primary school through university. He made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing a programme marking Khudiram Bose Atmabalidan Divas in Keshpur, West Midnapore district.

Adhikari said the government intends to give greater space to the lives and sacrifices of freedom fighters in the syllabus across educational levels. He argued that students should have access to a detailed account of India’s freedom movement rather than brief references to figures such as Khudiram Bose. The initiative, according to the Chief Minister, is intended to promote awareness of the country’s history and the sacrifices made during the independence movement.

The Chief Minister also criticised previous Left Front and Trinamool Congress governments over what he described as inadequate representation of freedom fighters in educational curricula. He referred to the inclusion of a chapter on the Singur agitation during the previous Trinamool Congress government and argued that the history of the freedom movement should receive greater emphasis in schools and higher education.

Speaking about Khudiram Bose, Adhikari announced that Khudiram Bose Atmabalidan Divas would be observed every year to honour the freedom fighter. Bose was executed by the British in 1908 at the age of 18 for his involvement in the revolutionary movement against colonial rule. Adhikari argued that limiting his story to a few lines in textbooks was insufficient and urged the Education Department to expand his coverage from school to university level.

The Chief Minister also announced that the state government was taking steps to renovate Khudiram Bose’s ancestral home, which he described as having remained neglected. The proposed curriculum changes are part of a broader review of West Bengal’s education system under the current government, with officials working on revisions to school textbooks and the wider syllabus.

School Education Minister Dipak Burman said earlier this month that the revised school syllabus would be introduced from the 2028 academic year. Existing textbooks will continue to be used and reviewed during the 2027 academic year, while a syllabus committee has been tasked with preparing a long-term plan for restructuring the state’s education system. The government has indicated that the broader revision will seek to shape the curriculum for both current and future generations of students.
