CJI Surya Kant Declares Only the Bar Can Save the "Invisible Victims" of the Judicial System

CJI Surya Kant urges lawyers to uphold constitutional values and protect marginalized communities.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant delivered a compelling address at a Constitution Day event, highlighting the indispensable role of the legal profession in safeguarding the rule of law and the Constitution. He stressed that the Bar plays a crucial part in rescuing society’s "invisible victims"—those marginalized by poverty and social exclusion—by actively providing legal aid and championing constitutional principles. The CJI underscored that the collective effort of lawyers can generate a ripple effect, fostering meaningful social change and reinforcing constitutional values in daily life.

He pointed out that the judiciary relies heavily on the advocacy of the Bar, especially when adjudicating constitutional matters, and likened lawyers to torchbearers illuminating pathways for justice. By invoking the importance of responsible legal practice, he emphasized that the judiciary and the Bar are equal partners entrusted with the guardianship of the Constitution, working together in a shared mission to uphold democratic institutions.

During the event, the CJI also highlighted the broader responsibilities of the legal fraternity, including ensuring justice accessibility for all, addressing issues like black money in elections, and preventing individuals with criminal backgrounds from entering Parliament. He called on lawyers to actively promote constitutional morality through their work, both inside and outside courtroom settings. The event was attended by numerous international judges, reflecting India's commitment to global judicial collaboration and constitutional dialogue.
