CID Launches Two Probes Over Alleged Police Involvement In MP Sand Mining, Extortion
CID probes alleged police role in MP sand mining and extortion.
The Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Madhya Pradesh has launched two separate preliminary enquiries into alleged police involvement in illegal sand mining and an extortion-linked case, officials said on Saturday.According to Special Director General of Police (CID) Pankaj Srivastava, both probes have been initiated under the state government’s “zero tolerance” policy towards corruption. The investigations were registered within two days following complaints and intelligence inputs pointing to possible misconduct by police personnel.
The first enquiry pertains to suspected involvement of local police officials in illegal sand mining operations along the Sindh River in Bhind district, part of the Gwalior-Chambal region. Acting on these inputs, the CID has begun an internal investigation, and a sub-inspector posted at a local outpost under Raun police station has already been removed from field duties and attached to the police headquarters pending further inquiry.
The second probe stems from a complaint filed by a Kolkata-based businessman, who alleged that his son-in-law, a liquor trader, was falsely implicated in a narcotics case registered in Sagar district in August 2025. The complainant further claimed that the family received repeated calls demanding ₹6 crore in exchange for “settling” or weakening the case, raising serious allegations of extortion linked to the investigation process.

The case involves arrests across multiple locations, including Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Mumbai, in connection with alleged MDMA trafficking. The businessman’s family has approached both Kolkata Police and the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police, alleging wrongful implication and sustained harassment through extortion demands.
Officials said the CID will examine all aspects of the allegations, including the possible role of police personnel in both cases. The developments come amid growing scrutiny over illegal sand mining networks in parts of Madhya Pradesh, particularly in the Chambal region, where enforcement agencies have faced repeated challenges in curbing such activities.Authorities have reiterated that strict action will be taken if wrongdoing is established, with the outcome of the probes expected to determine further legal and departmental proceedings against those found involved.
