Child's Refusal to Wear Seatbelt Forces Porter Airlines Flight Cancellation, Strands Passengers

A Porter Airlines flight bound for Toronto was cancelled on Thursday, August 6, after a young child stood on an aircraft seat and could not be secured with a seatbelt. The incident occurred aboard flight PD444 at Victoria International Airport, leaving passengers stranded overnight after the resulting delay extended beyond the airport runway’s operating hours.

According to Porter Airlines, the aircraft’s doors had been closed and the plane had departed the terminal before beginning to taxi towards the runway. Cabin crew members then noticed that the child was standing on the seat without a fastened seatbelt. Because aviation safety rules require passengers to be seated and properly restrained before takeoff, the aircraft could not continue its departure.

The cabin crew and the child’s parent attempted to persuade the child to sit down and fasten the restraint, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The crew consequently decided to return the aircraft to the terminal so the child and accompanying parent could disembark. Porter Airlines said the plane could not take off while the child remained unrestrained because the situation posed a safety risk.

Removing the two passengers and their luggage took additional time. The airline also had to revise the flight plan and complete other operational paperwork before seeking clearance to depart again. These procedures continued beyond 12.30 a.m. local time, when the airport runway was scheduled to close for the night, preventing the Toronto-bound flight from operating as planned.

The cancellation forced the remaining passengers to spend the night in Victoria. Porter Airlines apologised for the disruption and its effect on other travellers, confirming that the affected passengers would be able to leave on another flight on Friday. The airline did not disclose the total number of people aboard PD444 or provide details about accommodation and other assistance offered after the cancellation.

The incident highlights the strict safety procedures airlines must follow before takeoff, including ensuring that every passenger is seated with a properly secured restraint. Cabin crew members are required to delay or stop a departure if those conditions are not met. No injuries were reported during the incident, and the disruption resulted from the time needed to resolve the safety issue and complete the required operational procedures.
