Chhagan Bhujbal Confirms Increased LPG Production And Vigilance To Prevent Black Marketing
Maharashtra assures smooth LPG supply; citizens urged not to panic despite price rise.
Maharashtra Minister of Food and Civil Supply Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday urged citizens not to panic amid concerns over LPG supply, emphasizing that both the Central and State Governments are taking proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted availability. Speaking in the state Legislative Council, Bhujbal also noted that edible oil prices have risen only moderately compared to pre-conflict levels in the Middle East.
The minister outlined priority allocation for commercial LPG amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions. Hospitals, educational institutions, crematoriums, old age homes, and orphanages will receive 100 per cent of their LPG requirements. Defence, government sectors, railways, aviation, and police/jail canteens are to receive 70 per cent, while Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation canteens, pharmaceutical industries, seed processing units, and fisheries will get 50 per cent supply.
To bolster production and distribution, Bhujbal said refinery output has been increased from 9,000 metric tonnes to 11,000 metric tonnes. District-level control rooms and special committees have been established to monitor supply, while regular coordination meetings are being held with BPCL, HPCL, IOCL, and LPG distributors. The state has also ordered police protection for transportation and taken steps to resolve technical issues in gas refill booking apps and missed call services.

The minister clarified that setting rates and supply levels for petroleum products is a responsibility of the Central Government. Following recent Middle East tensions, the Centre issued orders on March 5, 2026, restricting LPG supply for domestic use. Domestic cylinder prices have been raised from ₹852.50 to ₹912.50, while commercial cylinders now cost ₹1,835, up from ₹1,720.50.
Bhujbal highlighted state efforts to prevent black marketing, including the formation of district vigilance squads. Between January and March, inspections numbered 2,129, leading to the seizure of 1,208 gas cylinders valued at ₹33.66 lakh, 23 cases filed, and 18 arrests made. Additionally, the state is exploring distribution of kerosene as an alternative fuel, as informed to the Nagpur Bench of the High Court on March 11, 2026.
The minister assured citizens that oil companies hold sufficient LPG stocks and that distribution remains smooth, reinforcing that the combined measures of increased production, prioritized allocation, and vigilant monitoring are designed to prevent shortages and ensure energy security across Maharashtra.
