Centre Seeks Detailed Explanation From Meta Over PM Modi's Facebook Post

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sought a detailed explanation from Meta over the temporary restriction placed on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post. The government has asked the social media company to provide both technical and policy-level details explaining how the incident occurred, with senior Meta officials expected to meet government representatives within the next seven to 10 days.
MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the Centre intends to raise its concerns directly with Meta and seek a comprehensive account of the circumstances that resulted in the brief restriction. He said that while the company has expressed regret and shared an initial explanation, the government is seeking further clarity on the issue.
Krishnan stated that Meta has been asked to explain the safeguards being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. According to him, the government wants details about the internal processes and mechanisms that led to the restriction and how such errors will be avoided going forward.

The development follows the government’s decision to summon a senior Meta executive after the temporary restriction was placed on Prime Minister Modi’s Facebook post. The post, published on July 23, focused on India’s youth and highlighted the government’s commitment to taking strict action against examination paper leaks, including cases related to the NEET examination.
Meta had earlier attributed the restriction to a technical issue and issued an apology over the incident. However, the government maintained that the explanation provided by the company was not sufficient and required further examination to understand the reasons behind the action.
Krishnan said Meta has informed the government that it introduced a new protocol from July 28 to prevent similar incidents. The updated process reportedly includes additional oversight for posts made by the Prime Minister and other high-profile accounts, with the company aiming to strengthen safeguards against accidental restrictions on important public communications.
