Centre Claims 17 Crore Jobs Created In 10 Years Amid Gen Z Employment Concerns

Amid growing concerns among young Indians, particularly members of Generation Z, over unemployment and limited job opportunities, the Centre on Tuesday highlighted its employment record, claiming that more than 17 crore employment opportunities were created in the country between 2014 and 2024. The figures were presented by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during a meeting with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs, where the government outlined its achievements in employment generation, skill development, and social security initiatives over the past decade.

Citing data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Mandaviya said India witnessed the creation of over 17 crore jobs during the 10-year period under the NDA government. According to the presentation shared during the meeting, the employment growth recorded between 2014 and 2024 was nearly six times higher compared with the previous decade from 2004 to 2014. The minister described the figures as evidence of the government's focus on expanding employment opportunities and strengthening the country's workforce.

The presentation placed employment generation and skill development at the centre of the government's broader vision for a developed India. It highlighted various initiatives aimed at improving workforce participation, enhancing skills, and increasing access to livelihood opportunities. The government said these measures were designed to address changing economic requirements and prepare young Indians for emerging sectors driven by technology, manufacturing, and services.

During the briefing, the NDA government also contrasted its employment performance with that of the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, which was in power from 2004 to 2014. The presentation claimed that while India was the world's 10th-largest economy during the UPA period, employment growth remained relatively slow compared with the expansion witnessed in the subsequent decade. The government argued that policy measures introduced after 2014 helped accelerate job creation and economic activity.

The employment figures were presented at a time when job availability remains a major concern among young people entering the workforce. Gen Z workers and job seekers have increasingly raised concerns over competitive recruitment processes, changing employment patterns, and the availability of stable career opportunities. The government has maintained that initiatives focused on infrastructure expansion, entrepreneurship, digital growth, manufacturing, and skill training have contributed to increasing employment prospects.

However, employment data and its interpretation have often been a subject of debate among economists, political parties, and policy experts. While the government has pointed to RBI-based estimates as proof of job creation, critics have questioned the quality, nature, and stability of employment opportunities generated during the period. Discussions around unemployment continue to focus not only on the number of jobs created but also on wages, job security, workforce participation, and the ability of new jobs to meet the aspirations of India's growing young population.

The Centre's latest presentation reflects its effort to highlight economic achievements and address concerns over employment ahead of wider political discussions. With millions of young Indians entering the workforce every year, employment generation remains one of the key policy challenges for the government, requiring continued focus on economic growth, skill development, and the creation of sustainable career opportunities.
