Central Board of Secondary Education Introduces AI Curriculum For Classes 3–8 Under NEP 2020 Reform

CBSE introduces AI and computational thinking curriculum for Classes 3–8 under NEP 2020 framework.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of a new curriculum on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students from Classes 3 to 8, beginning with the 2026–27 academic session. The decision was formally notified on April 9, 2026, alongside the designation of “Computational Thinking and Understanding AI” as the training theme for the current academic session.

The move is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. According to CBSE, the initiative aims to strengthen students’ logical reasoning, structured problem-solving abilities, and understanding of ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence, while also helping teachers adopt modern pedagogical approaches across subjects.

As part of the rollout, CBSE has outlined key sub-themes for school-level training activities. These include foundational concepts of computational thinking and AI readiness, progressive teaching methods from play-based learning to abstraction, the role of mathematics in AI development, interdisciplinary applications across subjects, real-world uses of AI, assessment strategies, and ethical considerations in AI usage.

The board has also encouraged schools to organise district-level workshops focused on these themes. Institutions will have the flexibility to plan offline training sessions, select topics, invite experts, and manage logistical arrangements independently, while maintaining proper records of all training activities conducted during the session.

In addition, CBSE will conduct regional workshops and orientation programmes under its Centres of Excellence framework. Teachers can participate through online registration by paying a prescribed fee of ₹700, with schools permitted to nominate educators for these sessions to enhance their understanding of CT and AI integration in classrooms.

The board has urged all affiliated schools to actively participate in these initiatives, highlighting that the integration of computational thinking and artificial intelligence across subjects such as mathematics, science, social studies, and languages is essential for preparing students for future academic and technological challenges.
