CEC Gyanesh Kumar Pays Tribute At Sabarmati Ashram On Gujarat Visit
Gyanesh Kumar begins his first Gujarat visit as CEC.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar began his two-day visit to Gujarat on Thursday with a visit to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, where he paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and visited Hriday Kunj, Gandhi’s former residence. The visit is part of the Election Commission of India’s efforts to engage election officials, voters and citizens on election management and electoral awareness. Kumar arrived at Ahmedabad airport earlier in the day and was received by Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer Sandeep Sagale, Ahmedabad Collector Bhavya Verma and other senior officials.
At the historic ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati, Kumar paid tribute at Gandhi’s statue and later observed the process of spinning yarn on a charkha. He also recorded a message in the visitors’ book, describing the ashram as a place from where the message of world peace and humanity spread. During his visit, Kumar was briefed on the Gandhi Ashram renovation project by officials accompanying him.
The Gujarat visit includes a series of engagements focused on election management, voter awareness and interaction with citizens. Kumar is scheduled to visit the historic Adalaj Stepwell to learn about the state’s cultural heritage. He will also visit the Ahmedabad Management Association campus, where he is expected to interact with prominent citizens on the theme of conducting elections in India, described as the world’s largest democracy.

On the second day of the visit, September 11, Kumar will meet more than 500 Booth Level Officers from across Gujarat at Atal Kalam Hall at Gujarat University. The interaction is aimed at discussing various aspects of election management and strengthening engagement with officials working at the grassroots level. Booth Level Officers play a key role in maintaining electoral rolls and facilitating voter-related services.
Kumar will subsequently visit the AUDA Auditorium in Shela, where he will interact with more than 1,000 members of Electoral Literacy Clubs. The engagement is expected to focus on electoral awareness and encouraging citizens, particularly young people, to understand and participate in the democratic process. The programme forms part of the Election Commission’s broader outreach efforts to promote electoral literacy.
The two-day programme marks Kumar’s first visit to Gujarat as Chief Election Commissioner and brings together election functionaries, electoral literacy groups and citizens. The schedule combines visits to sites of historical and cultural significance with discussions on election administration and voter awareness. Through these engagements, the Election Commission is seeking to strengthen communication with stakeholders across different levels of the electoral process.
