CEA Stresses Urgent AI Adoption Linked to Jobs for India’s Growth and Stability

CEA emphasizes urgent AI adoption aligned with skills development to drive growth and social stability in India.

Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran on Monday underlined that artificial intelligence adoption in India must be strategically aligned with mass employability to ensure sustainable economic growth. Speaking virtually at the AI Impact Summit 2026, he warned that technology cannot be adopted passively and requires decisive policy action.

Nageswaran highlighted the importance of strengthening the foundations of education, providing high-quality skill training, expanding labour-intensive service sectors, and removing regulatory bottlenecks to fully leverage AI’s potential. “The window is open still, but it is not indefinite. We must act and act now,” he said.

He stressed that AI adoption must be a collaborative “Team India” effort, involving the private sector, academics, and policymakers. According to him, proactive coordination between these stakeholders is crucial for shaping an AI-driven economy that is inclusive and sustainable.

Pointing to the existing skill gap, Nageswaran noted that while millions of jobs are created annually, only a small fraction of the workforce has received formal skill training. He described this as a structural vulnerability that could hinder the benefits of AI unless addressed urgently.

To tackle this challenge, Nageswaran called for a decisive policy shift, urging political will, strong state capacity, and institutional discipline to integrate AI adoption with employment creation. “For India, this is not a debate about the future of work, it is a decision about the future of growth and social stability,” he said.

He concluded that with foresight and relentless execution, India has the opportunity to become the first large society to demonstrate “true human abundance,” where technological progress and job creation advance hand in hand, securing economic and social prosperity for all citizens.
