CBI Arrests Railway Officer For Allegedly Accepting Bribe In Varanasi

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior railway officer in Varanasi for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.70 lakh, officials said on Friday. The arrested officer, identified as the Senior Divisional Materials Manager (Sr DMM) of the North Eastern Railway (NER), was allegedly caught accepting illegal gratification in exchange for processing pending payments and facilitating future contracts.
According to the CBI, the agency registered a case on July 23 following a complaint by the proprietor of a private firm registered on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). The complainant alleged that his company had supplied furniture worth Rs 9.47 lakh to the Sr DMM office in Varanasi between February and June 2026 but had received only partial payment for the supplies.
The complaint further alleged that the railway officer demanded Rs 1.70 lakh as a bribe on July 15 to clear the pending dues and assist with future payments. The officer was also accused of threatening to deny future contracts if the demand was not fulfilled, according to the CBI statement.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on July 23 and allegedly caught the railway official red-handed while accepting the bribe amount. Following the operation, the accused public servant was arrested and presented before a competent court in Lucknow, which sent him to judicial custody until August 7.
The CBI said further investigation into the bribery case is underway to establish the complete sequence of events and identify any additional involvement. The agency has continued its action against alleged corruption cases involving public officials across different departments.
In a separate case, a special CBI court in Ghaziabad convicted a former branch manager of Sarva UP Gramin Bank in Meerut in a 10-year-old bribery case. Umesh Kumar Singhal, who was posted as branch manager at the bank’s Machhra branch, was sentenced to four years of imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 for allegedly accepting a Rs 25,000 bribe from a loan applicant.
