CBFC Blocks Oscar-Nominated Gaza Film in India, Cites Fear of Damaging India-Israel Ties

The CBFC refuses to certify the Oscar-nominated Gaza film, citing India-Israel diplomatic concerns.

The Oscar-nominated film The Voice of Hind Rajab has reportedly been blocked from release in India after the Central Board of Film Certification declined to grant it certification, citing concerns over potential diplomatic sensitivities.

According to reports, the film’s Indian distributor claimed that certification was denied over fears it could impact India’s relationship with Israel. The distributor argued that such concerns were unfounded, noting that the film has already been released in several countries maintaining ties with Israel.

Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the film tells the story of a six-year-old Palestinian girl trapped in a car amid conflict in Gaza Strip. It follows rescue efforts by emergency responders and is based on a real incident that drew global attention and sparked outrage over civilian casualties.

The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize along with several other honours. It later received nominations at major global platforms, including the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards, further boosting its international profile.

Despite its global recognition, the film’s release in India now appears uncertain. The decision has raised questions around censorship, artistic freedom, and the balance between cultural expression and diplomatic considerations, especially in the context of sensitive geopolitical issues.
