Calcutta High Court Seeks FIR Report On Abhishek Banerjee’s Aide

The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a detailed report on all FIRs registered against Sumit Roy, the personal assistant to Trinamool Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee. A single-judge bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya sought details of the cases registered by the state police and fixed September 10 as the next date of hearing.

The court also directed that no coercive action be taken against Roy until the next hearing. Justice Bhattacharya observed that if the police attempted any coercive action during the interim period, Roy would be entitled to bring the matter to the court’s attention through his counsel. The order came during the hearing of Roy’s plea concerning the cases registered against him by the state police.

Roy’s counsel told the court that his client had been cooperating with the investigations and had appeared before investigating officers whenever summoned. The lawyer submitted that the first FIR against Roy was registered on June 5, followed by another on June 16, with additional cases being registered subsequently. He alleged that new cases were being filed against Roy frequently, which he described as an attempt to harass his client.

Following the submissions, the court sought a comprehensive account of all FIRs registered against Roy by the West Bengal Police so far. The state government, represented by Additional Advocate General Rajdip Majumdar, urged the court to defer the proceedings, pointing out that a similar matter involving Roy was already pending before the Supreme Court. The state’s counsel also informed the bench that Rs 20 crore had been transferred to a particular bank account through Roy.

The West Bengal Police have accused Roy in connection with two broad allegations. One relates to alleged illegal land-grabbing, while the other concerns alleged irregularities in state government recruitments during the previous Trinamool Congress-led government headed by Mamata Banerjee. The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.

With the DGP’s report now sought, the High Court is expected to examine the details and circumstances surrounding the FIRs at the next hearing. The interim protection against coercive action will remain in place until September 10, when the matter is scheduled to come up again before the court.
