Calcutta High Court Bans Firecrackers After 10 pm on Shab-e-Barat
Calcutta High Court bans firecrackers from 10 pm to 6 am on Shab-e-Barat night to curb noise and pollution.
The Calcutta High Court has issued a strict order regulating the bursting of firecrackers on the night of Shab-e-Barat, set to be observed on February 4. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen directed that no firecrackers should be used from 10 pm until 6 am the next morning, ensuring compliance with West Bengal Pollution Control Board guidelines.
The ruling came following a Public Interest Litigation filed by Shagufta Suleman, highlighting the uncontrolled and loud bursting of firecrackers across Kolkata during Shab-e-Barat. The petitioner argued that such practices are not prescribed in the Holy Quran and have caused distress to the elderly, children, sick individuals, and pets.
Court sources noted that similar regulations are already in place for festivals such as Kali Puja, Christmas, and Chhath Puja, where only green fireworks are permitted during specified hours. The High Court emphasized that enforcement measures will be taken against violators, allowing police to act against offenders.

The Bench also cited previous instances where court orders were ignored, such as last year when firecrackers were set off in Park Street and Ripon Street despite an existing ban. This disregard for regulations prompted the court to reiterate strict control for Shab-e-Barat to prevent health hazards and noise pollution.
Authorities have been instructed to ensure effective implementation of the ban, with police monitoring key areas and taking action if the order is violated. The High Court’s intervention aims to balance public celebration with environmental and public health considerations.
Officials and environmentalists welcomed the order, stating it could help reduce air and noise pollution, while encouraging the public to observe Shab-e-Barat in a safe and responsible manner. Residents have been urged to follow the guidelines and report violations to maintain harmony during the holy night.
