Calcutta HC Allows Separate Foundation Day Events For Rival TMC Student Factions

Rival TMC factions will hold separate student wing events.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday permitted two factions of the Trinamool Congress to separately organise celebrations marking the foundation day of the party’s student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), on August 28. However, the court did not allow either faction to hold the programme at Mayo Road in central Kolkata, where the annual event had traditionally been organised.

The decision came after representatives of both factions approached a single-judge Bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya seeking permission to conduct their respective programmes at Mayo Road. The venue has historically hosted the TMCP foundation day celebrations, including during the period when the Trinamool Congress functioned as a unified political organisation.

The faction led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee has been permitted to organise its programme at Cathedral Road in central Kolkata. The other faction, led by expelled party legislator and Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, has been allowed to hold its event at Rani Rashmoni Road, also in central Kolkata.

The court imposed several conditions on both programmes to ensure that the separate gatherings do not create law-and-order or traffic-related difficulties. Neither faction will be permitted to have more than 1,500 participants at its event. The Kolkata Police has also been directed to make adequate security arrangements at both venues.

Both programmes will take place between noon and 3 p.m. on August 28. Each faction has also been directed to submit the names of 15 volunteers to the Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police by 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The court further ordered that the gatherings remain restricted to one lane at each venue, while the second lane must remain clear for traffic movement.

The separate celebrations come against the backdrop of a political split within the Trinamool Congress following the party’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. TMCP’s foundation day had traditionally been associated with the Mayo Road venue, but the court’s directions mean the two factions will now hold separate programmes at different locations under specified conditions.
