Building Collapse in Vasai, Palghar Kills Two

Two dead, nine injured in Vasai building collapse.

A devastating tragedy struck Maharashtra’s Palghar district in the early hours of Wednesday when the rear portion of the four-storey Ramabai Apartment in Vasai collapsed onto an adjacent chawl, killing two people and injuring nine others. The incident, which occurred around 12:05 AM on Narangi Road, has prompted an intense rescue operation as authorities race to ensure no one remains trapped in the debris.

According to Vivekanand Kadam, District Disaster Management Officer of Palghar, the collapse buried multiple residents under rubble, with rescuers pulling out 11 individuals so far. Tragically, Aarohi Omkar Jovil, 24, and one-year-old Utkarsha Jovil were found unresponsive and declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The nine injured victims, some with severe injuries, were rushed to hospitals in Virar and Nalasopara, on the outskirts of Mumbai, for urgent medical care.

The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC), alongside the fire department and two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), swiftly mobilized to the site. Equipped with advanced tools and trained personnel, rescue teams are working tirelessly to search for survivors. “Our priority is to ensure no one remains trapped,” Kadam stated, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to clear the debris safely.

To manage the chaotic scene, authorities have erected a temporary barricade around the site for crowd control and safety. Structural engineers are assessing the stability of the remaining portions of Ramabai Apartment and nearby buildings to prevent further collapses. As a precaution, residents from adjacent structures have been evacuated, and municipal officials are investigating the cause of the collapse, which has raised concerns about the safety of aging buildings in the area.

The incident has left the community in shock, with authorities vowing to provide support to affected families and ensure a thorough investigation to prevent future tragedies in Palghar.
