Building A Greener Shillong: Meghalaya CM Charts Urban Growth Path

Meghalaya CM reviews urban infrastructure, mobility, and eco-tourism plans to boost sustainable development in Shillong.

Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday chaired a series of high-level review meetings focused on urban development, mobility, eco-tourism, and sustainable growth in the state capital Shillong, as the government pushes forward with multiple infrastructure and governance reforms.

The meetings, held at the State Guest House in Taraghar, brought together senior ministers and top bureaucrats, including Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed, and Tourism Commissioner Vijay Kumar D. Officials reviewed ongoing projects across departments, with a particular emphasis on improving urban infrastructure and enhancing long-term economic value.

A key focus of the discussions was urban redevelopment, with the Chief Minister stressing the need to maximise public utility and promote economic activity through well-planned city spaces. He also encouraged the use of innovative financing models, including public-private partnerships, while urging departments to carefully evaluate concession-based approaches before deploying government funds.

Connectivity and mobility emerged as another major priority, with reviews of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation and discussions on strengthening last-mile transport links. The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of making public transport more accessible and efficient, while also exploring measures to encourage greater public adoption of these services.

The Forest and Environment Department’s performance was also reviewed, with Conrad K. Sangma calling for measurable outcomes within a three-to-six-month timeframe. Discussions included wildlife conservation, reduction of human-animal conflict, forest protection, and strict action against illegal mining and smuggling activities, alongside a push for eco-tourism through professionally managed public-private partnerships.

The Chief Minister also reviewed proposals in sectors such as cultural documentation, agarwood and essential oils development, and preparations for the National Games 2027. Infrastructure readiness and athlete training were assessed as key priorities, while waste management initiatives, including bio-remediation at the Marten landfill, were highlighted as part of broader efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable urban development in Meghalaya.
