BSWML Selects 100+ Acres for Large‑Scale Waste Management Project
BSWML earmarks over 100 acres near Gundalahalli and Gollahalli for Bengaluru’s integrated solid waste project.
Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has identified more than 100 acres of land for a large‑scale integrated solid waste management project on the outskirts of the city as part of efforts to overhaul the beleaguered garbage system. The move comes amid growing daily waste generation — Bengaluru now produces nearly 6,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each day — and increasing pressure on local authorities to adopt scientific processing and disposal methods.
BSWML Chief Executive Officer Karee Gowda told reporters that the identified land includes parcels near Terra Farm in Gundalahalli village of Doddaballapur taluk and government land at Gollahalli in Bengaluru South. The acquisition process will proceed after landowners are compensated at a fixed rate of ₹1.57 crore per acre, as determined by the state government.
The integrated waste project envisages facilities capable of handling a broad range of solid waste treatment functions — from segregation and recycling to processing of refuse‑derived fuel (RDF) and other outputs — marking a shift toward a more scientific waste management ecosystem in the city. As part of separate initiatives, the city has already begun collecting and monetising low‑value plastics through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credits, generating revenue that can help fund waste infrastructure.

Under the plan, the identified land will host integrated solid waste management parks that can serve as hubs for processing and sorting various waste streams. Details on specific facility designs and timelines are still being developed, but officials say works will begin once land acquisition is finalised.
The identification of such a significant land area follows ongoing efforts to restructure Bengaluru’s entire solid waste value chain, including proposals for public‑private partnerships under a "single operator" model and tenders for large‑scale facilities covering northern and southern parts of the city.
Civic bodies and environmental planners have long acknowledged the need for integrated waste handling infrastructure to reduce reliance on landfills and address persistent issues such as unscientific dumping and collection delays. The acreage earmarked for this project represents a major step toward that goal, though challenges remain in execution, funding and community engagement.
