BSF Seizes Gold Worth ₹1.02 Crore Hidden Inside Bicycle Tyre on India-Bangladesh Border
Daring cross-border gold haul seized in broad daylight at Malda frontier.
Acting on pinpoint intelligence, troops of the 119th Battalion, Border Security Force, intercepted a massive gold smuggling attempt along the porous India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Malda district on Thursday afternoon, recovering 816.41 grams of 24-carat gold valued at ₹1,02,40,230. The entire consignment had been cunningly concealed within the front tyre of an unassuming bicycle being pushed across the international boundary by a lone operative.
At 2:56 p.m., jawans posted at M.S. Pur Border Outpost observed a suspicious individual approaching the zero line from the Bangladesh side. Upon being signalled to halt, the man complied initially, allowing the troops to begin routine inspection of the bicycle. The front tyre, however, appeared abnormally rigid and swollen, prompting the soldiers to immediately deflate and dismantle it on the spot.
Inside the rubber tubing, wrapped in multiple layers of polythene and secured with adhesive tape, lay seven perfectly shaped gold biscuits gleaming under the afternoon sun. The seized metal was formally weighed at the border outpost in the presence of independent witnesses before being handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and customs officials for further legal formalities.

Seizing the moment when attention shifted to the extraordinary discovery, the smuggler bolted towards a crowded village barely 200 metres away. With civilians in the direct line of fire, the troops refrained from opening fire, prioritising public safety over immediate apprehension. A large-scale cordon-and-search operation was launched within minutes, but the perpetrator managed to vanish into the maze of narrow lanes.
The South Bengal Frontier headquarters praised the battalion for yet another major success against organised gold syndicates and reiterated its appeal to border residents to share credible information through the toll-free Seema Sathi helpline 14419 or WhatsApp number 9903472227, promising strict confidentiality and handsome rewards for tips that lead to recovery of contraband.
